lyrics

When I’m done, when I’m gone,
Take the thorns from my head,
Take me down, lay me down,
That’s where I’ll make my bed.
I don’t wanna hear no cryin’
Cause it ain’t that kind o’ dead,
When I’m done, when I’m gone
Take the thorns right from my head.

I been workin’ on this chain gang for 47 years,
Bustin’ rocks, punchin’ clocks, but my blood still runs red.
One day they came and got me – and they conked me on the head.
And when I awoke, the man next to me spoke, and this is what he said.

I opened my eyes to the sunrise, and I knew I’d lost my way,
I opened my mouth, nothin’ came out, ‘cause I don’t know how to pray.
I looked around and I wondered, will I live another day?
And then no joke, the man next to me spoke, and this is what I heard him say.

Now my arms are so tired and I can’t hold up my head,
I look around, blood’s flowin’ down, like a shiny river of red,
The light around me is fading, but there’s a brighter light ahead,
It was like I awoke when the man next to me spoke, and this is what he said.
