I been workin’ on this chain gang for 47 years,
Bustin’ rocks, punchin’ clocks, but my blood still runs red.
One day they came and got me – and they conked me on the head.
And when I awoke, the man next to me spoke, and this is what he said.

I opened my eyes to the sunrise, and I knew I’d lost my way,
I opened my mouth, nothin’ came out, ‘cause I don’t know how to pray.
I looked around and I wondered, will I live another day?
And then no joke, the man next to me spoke, and this is what I heard him say.
